The morning line odds and post positions for the 2024 Preakness Stakes are now available, which means we can start to break down this second race of the 2024 Triple Crown.
Mystik Dan, who won the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, has morning line odds of 5-2 as he looks to keep his shot a a Triple Crown alive. Muth, who did not run in the Derby, is the morning line favourite with odds of 8-5. Catching Freedom (6-1), Imagination (6-1), and Tuscan Gold (8-1) are the other contenders heading into the Preakness.
The field of 9 horses is a typical size for the Preakness Stakes, and with a field this size anything can happen. Let’s get into it!

The odds will change throughout the day depending on the amount of money that is wagered on the various horses in the field. As you can see Muth is a significant favourite heading into the race, while Mystik Dan is the second favourite.
Preakness Stakes Top Picks
Below I will give my favourite picks for the 2024 Preakness Stakes. I will definitely be adding some exacta’s on these two horses, which should have a very solid payout if they do both finish in the top 2.
Muth 8-5
Muth was unable to run in the Kentucky Derby due to Bob Baffert’s suspension from Churchill Downs stemming from a failed drug test after the the 2021 Kentucky Derby. Had Muth been in the field he would have been one of the favourite’s. Muth is coming off an impressive win at the Arkansas Derby in late March. Mystik Dan finished 3rd in that Arkansas Derby race. Muth has improved in every race and he should be fully prepared to peak for the Preakness after missing the Derby.
Catching Freedom 6-1
My next pick will be Catching Freedom at odds of 6-1. This is a horse that finished 4th in the Kentucky Derby with a very good showing. He also won the Louisana Derby in March, which was the same distance as the Preakness. Catching Freedom has won every second race he’s run in his career, so he’s due for a win at the Preakness after not getting the Derby victory.
