Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal will headline UFC 272 this Saturday, March 5th at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. This will be a rare UFC pay-per-view event that does not feature a title fight as the main event. The UFC will be relying on the star power and bad blood between Covington and Masvidal to sell this event.
Colby Covington is coming off a close decision loss to Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title this past November. This was Covington’s second crack at Usman, having lost their first title fight via a late finish back in 2019. Covington had picked up a dominant TKO victory over Tyron Woodley in after his first Usman loss to set up the rematch. Prior to his first title shot Covington had beaten top welterweights including Robbie Lawler, Rafael dos Anjos (for the interim belt), Demian Maia and Dong Hyun Kim. Covington gave Usman two great fights and is widely considered the second best welterweight in the world.
Jorge Masvidal is actually coming off of two straight title shot losses to Kamaru Usman. Masvidal originally lost to Usman by a one-sided decision in July of 2020 and was given an instant rematch for his next fight in April of 2021, which he lost via 2nd round knockout. Masvidal had been a journeyman for most of his career, but a massive 2019 made him a global UFC superstar. Masvidal had taken 2018 off after losing decisions to Demian Maia and Stephen Thompson in 2017. He returned in a big way defeating Darren Till by knockout, Ben Askren by the flying knee KO heard round the world, and finished the year defeating Nate Diaz for the honorary “BMF” belt. Masvidal became a huge star, so he was rewarded with his two cracks at the title.
Covington and Masvidal are now both superstars, and each fighter has lost twice to Kamaru Usman, so it’s the perfect time to make good on the bad blood between the pair and have them headline a pay-per-view event. Covington and Masvidal were best friends when they were starting their MMA careers. The pair trained together at American Top Team and even lived together. Things turned sour for the pair when Covington began to lean into his heel persona in order to try to gain favour with the UFC. Covington and Masvidal began taking shots at each other in the media, and their public feud has been ongoing for the past several years. The animosity will come to a head on Saturday in the cage.
