Last night could have been a great one for us, but unfortunately the Sens gave up their 1-0 lead midway through the third period and were unable to solve Mason again despite firing 42 shots throughout the game. Ottawa eventually lost in a shootout, which brought us back to 1-1 for the night. The Devils did do what I expected though and took it to the Oilers covering the puck line spread easily with a 4-1 win. That resulted in a +0.45 night for us.
NHL Season Record: 56-71 for -4.10 units.
Tonight there are only 4 games on the schedule, but I do have one play that I really like.
Washington Capitals @ Toronto Maple Leafs
The Maple Leafs just fired coach Randy Carlyle yesterday and now they will be back on the ice without their bench boss against a Capitals team that has been playing very well. The Maple Leafs have lost their last two games by a combined score of 8-2 and they went 2-4-1 on their recent 7 game road trip. The Leafs have only won 2 of their last 9 games and they’ve been outshot significantly in all but one of these games. The Leafs are just regressing to how bad they truly are. If their goaltenders don’t have a sensational night they usually lose the hockey game.
The Caps on the other hand have won their last 2 games and won 6 of their last 8. In fact, they’ve won 10 of their last 14 games and now sit securely in the playoffs in the East.
With the trends of both teams it is a surprise that the Capitals aren’t bigger favourites in this one. Yes, the Maple Leafs are at home, but they are just returning from a 5 game road trip they went on after the Christmas break and that can often result in a let down game back at home. I’m taking the Capitals in this one and am convinced it will take an amazing game from Bernier for the Leafs to get the win. I’m actually confident enough to make this a puck line play.
