Last night was my first really tough night of the NHL season. I went 1 for 4 with my only win coming thanks to the Canucks beating the horrible Oilers on the road. The Maple Leafs were outplayed by the Red Wings and were taken out of the game early by a few beautiful plays by Henrik Zetterberg. The Wild were up on the Ducks heading into the third, but a couple goals by the Ducks at home in the third cost us a win there.
NHL Season Record: 14-9 for +6.96 units.
Anyways, moving on. Saturday’s are always a lot of fun in the NHL and today should be no different.
New York Islanders @ Pittsburgh Penguins
The Islanders are no joke this year. They dominated the Sharks the other night before winning in a shootout and they’re now 4-0 to start the season. The Pens are obviously a tough match up, but I like the momentum that the Islanders have and I think their high flying offense will keep going against Fleury, Crosby and company.
Not to mention the Tavares vs Crosby battle could very well be the battle for both the MVP and the scoring title this year. I think Tavares rises to the occasion and pots a few more points to show that he’s here to challenge Crosby as the top player in the league.

Boston Bruins @ Buffalo Sabres
The Bruins are not playing up to their standards so far this season, but they have the perfect opponent to turn their fortunes around tonight. The Sabres lost 1-0 to Florida last night and have just looked awful this season, which was expected. Look for the Bruins to win this one easily.

Colorado Avalanche @ Montreal Canadiens
The Avs aren’t off to a great start, but this is still a young talented team. I’m surprised to see them as such big underdogs heading to Montreal tonight. Calvin Pickard will likely get the start, but he didn’t play that poorly against the Sens the other night and I expect him to have a decent showing against the Habs. I’m not convinced the Avs will win this game, but I think it’s closer to a coin flip than the odds insist.

Toronto Maple Leafs @ Detroit Red Wings
The Wings brought the heat last night, but I’m expecting a bounce back game for the Leafs this evening. Howard is playing lights out right now, but he will be out tonight with Gustavsson coming in to play the second night of the back to back. I think this will definitely help the Maple Leafs who were getting their chances last night, but couldn’t get enough by Howard. I expect the Leafs to even their series with the Red Wings with a big road win tonight.

Nashville Predators @ Chicago Blackhawks
Sure, the Preds played last night, but a game against the Blackhawks will be enough to get any team jacked up. The Preds have been playing some great hockey so far this year as indicated by their 7 points in 4 games so far. They’re massive underdogs heading into this game, but I think they have a very good chance to beat the team I think is the best in the league. Rinne and the Preds shut out the Jets last night and I expect another strong defensive showing, which should result in the game going either way.

Tampa Bay Lightning @ Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks are off to a 3-0 start, but that includes 2 wins over the Oilers and 1 over the Flames so we really don’t know how good the Canucks are yet this season. The Lightning on the other hand are a legitimate high end team that should challenge for the Eastern Conference title. The Canucks played last night and that could affect some of their older stars like the Sedin twins and Vrbata. I like the Lightning to pull off a minor upset in this one.
