The PGA Championship is headed to the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina this week. The PGA Championship will be the second major of the 2021 season after The Masters returned to its normal April weekend. Rory McIlroy is the favourite this week after finding his game to win the Wells Fargo Championship in his last tournament. He also won the 2012 PGA Championship that took place at this same course, so he has both the form and course history boxes checked this week.
This weeks golf course is a long par 72 of 7,876 yards. The course was lengthened 200 yards since the 2012 PGA Championship. Players are going to have to hit good (and long) shots off the tee to have reasonable approaches from the fairway to get to some greens in regulation. I’m looking for players who are decently long off the tee, combined with a winning pedigree.
For my picks I will be using the best available odds from any of our recommended sportsbooks.
- Licensed and regulated in Canada
- Easy deposits & withdrawals including Interac
- Competitive betting lines
Dustin Johnson 18/1
DJ hasn’t had his A-game for the past few months and he is struggling with some knee discomfort, but at these odds I still think you have to consider him.
I believe Johnson is the most talented golfer on the tour and he has the ability to find the next gear at any point, even if he enters a tournament in poor form. He has the length to compete and he’s shown glimpses of his A-game in his past couple tournaments.
Justin Rose 80/1
Rose always seems to contend at majors. He has five top 10 finishes at majors in the past four years, and he was once again in contention at last months Masters.
Add in the fact that Justin Rose finished T3 at the 2012 PGA Championship at this same course and I think he has to be considered a contender.
If Rose can get the putter rolling this week he is a threat to win. I think at 80-1 he’s a great bet.
Bubba Watson 100/1
Bubba has a winning pedigree and he’s always a threat on long courses that fit his eye due to his length and shot shaping ability off the tee. Watson has been playing well of late finishing top 20 in his last two tournaments.
He also finished T11 at the 2012 PGA Championship, which included a final round 68 that shows he can go low at this course.
I’m a Bubba fan, so when I see him at 100-1 I’m going to pull the trigger.
Alex Noren 200/1
Noren has been playing solid golf of late. He’s finished T25 at his last three tournaments, and he opened the AT&T Byron Nelson last week shooting 16 birdies in the first two rounds. He wasn’t able to keep the momentum going through the weekend, but I still see rush of birdies as a positive for a guy who is normally a very steady golfer who has a hard time going that low. At these odds I like taking a shot on Noren.
