The 2019 Grey Cup Finals is set. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats cruised past the Eskimos to earn their spot, while the Blue Bombers defense stepped up once again to get the upset victory over the Roughriders and book their spot in the finals. I’m only 1-3 with my CFL picks these playoffs, but including the season I’m now 34-27-2, so I’m looking to add more profit from the Grey Cup.
This should be a classic offense vs defense battle with the Ti-Cats high powered offense needing to find a way against this Bombers defense that held the Stampeders and Roughriders to just 27 combined points in two road games.
The Ti-Cats are 4 point favourites after going 15-3 this season, but with game in Calgary, the Bombers are more of the “home team”, which could play a factor. The team from the division hosting the finals has won the Grey Cup every year dating back to 2010, so don’t overlook the location of this game.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs Winnipeg Blue Bombers
- Hamilton -4
- Winnipeg +4
The Ti-Cats absolutely lit up the league this year scoring 551 points during the season, and adding another 36 in their win over Edmonton last Sunday. The Ti-Cats deserve to be the favourites after the season they had. They are a high powered offense that is playing with a ton of confidence having scored 30+ points in their last 6 games. This is the classic offense vs defense battle.
The Bombers defense is peaking at the right time. Only allowing 14 and 13 points on the road in Calgary and Saskatchewan respectively is a very impressive feat, especially considering the Bombers weren’t great on the road this season.
I think the Bombers will be able to slow down the Ti-Cats offense, but Hamilton will still put up 20-25 points on a good day for the Bombers defense. That means the Bombers will need to score some points of their own in order to win this game. Zach Collaros played another good game against the Riders, and I think his ability combined with the ground game of Chris Streveler and Andrew Harris should allow the Bombers to move the ball a bit, but they will still need their defense to put them in good position to put points on the board.
This is a very tough bet for me. If it’s a pick’em I’m taking the Ti-Cats, but the 4 points makes me lean the Bombers. I think this could be a tightly contested game that is decided by a few plays and I think that +4 could come into play even if the Ti-Cats win. Add in the fact that this is a defacto home game for the Bombers and that stat that the team playing in their home division has won the past 8 Grey Cups cannot be overlooked. The fact that the Argos (2017) and Redblacks (2016) won the Grey Cups as .500 teams over the elite Stampeders with the games being played in Ontario (Toronto won in Ottawa and Ottawa won in Toronto) I think shows that location is still a huge factor even without a traditional “home” team.
Give me the Bombers plus the points.
Play: Blue Bombers +4
Over/Under 52
I’m taking the under in this game. The Blue Bombers defense has been so solid lately, I don’t think they will get lit up by the Ti-Cats high powered offense. I like the Ti-Cats to score 20-25 points and the Bombers to score somewhere from 15-25.
Play: Under 52
